Community Update - Winter 2009

Weather Emergencies
The Farmington City Code prohibits parking of vehicles on City streets during a declared weather emergency. A winter weather emergency is typically declared when six or more inches of snow accumulates within a one-day period. A serious ice storm may also prompt a weather emergency declaration. The City will provide notice on Cable Channel 15, Detroit area television and radio stations.

The City declares winter emergencies in order to provide the Department of Public Works an opportunity to plow the streets. When City crews have to plow around parked vehicles, it leaves an obstruction in the road that reduces the safety and convenience for other motorists. It is important to note that a weather emergency may last for a few days until the residential streets have been cleared. Once the emergency has been lifted, vehicles can be parked on the street.

When a significant accumulation is taking place or forecasted, the same for an ice storm, the City would request that the vehicles parked on the street be moved to a driveway. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Residential Refuse and Recycling Fees
The December tax bill will include the second installment of the Refuse and Recycling Fee. If you recall, this past July the City changed the manner in which the City finances residential refuse collection, recycling collection, yard waste processing, and the fall leaf collection program. Prior to 2008, the City paid for these services through a recycling special assessment and through the general operating millage. Beginning in 2008, these services are paid by a Residential Refuse and Recycling Fee. From a city-wide standpoint, these changes are revenue neutral.

In summary, residents will see the following changes beginning with the July 2008 tax bill:

  • July 2008 Tax Bill - Eliminated Recycling Assessment ($99.27 in 2007);
  • July 2008 Tax Bill - Added Refuse and Recycling Fee of $90.93;
  • July 2008 Tax Bill – Reduced City operating millage by six-tenths of one mill (0.6);
  • December 2008 - Second Installment of Refuse and Recycling Fee of $90.93.

Boards, Committees and Commissions
The City of Farmington is always looking for residents to serve on various boards and committees. As of December 1, the City has two vacancies on the Historical Commission and two alternate positions on the Board of Zoning Appeals. In addition, Farmington has a vacancy for a representative on the Arts Commission which is a joint commission with the City of Farmington Hills. Please contact the City Manager’s Office by phone at 248.474.5500, x 221 or by e-mail at cpoole@ci.farmington.mi.us for an application. The City Council will review the applications and will look to schedule a meeting with interested applicants.
