What is RSS?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of Internet users to keep track of their favorite news sources, websites and blogs. RSS makes it possible to view and read new information such as news story headlines without requiring readers to constantly visit a Web site to see what's new. There are several desktop software applications known as news readers or aggregators that will collect, update and display RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources. They ae available for you to download, at no cost, from Yahoo Widgets and Google Desktop Gadgets websites, along with a great many widgets and gadgets which were created for a mind-boggling array of applications other than newsgathering, such as games and calendars. News readers vary in how they look and act. As a result, you may want to try out a few before choosing one.

Other newsreader versions are web and browser-based. Google and Yahoo, among others, offer web-based news aggregators that you add to your Google, Yahoo, Flikr, Facebook, etc. personal page, if you've created one. After installing the news reader, you can manually add each news feed from a website by clicking on the "RSS," "Subscribe" or the "XML" orange button next to the feed, such as the City of Farmington's below.
