City of Farmington
RSS
What is RSS?
RSS is an acronym for Really Simple
Syndication. RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of Internet
users to keep track of their favorite news sources, websites and blogs. RSS
makes it possible to view and read new information such as news story
headlines without requiring readers to constantly visit a Web site to see
what's new. RSS feeds contain headlines and hyperlinks to longer articles or
Web pages. The City of Farmington feeds are FREE, as are most news media
feeds.
How Does It Work?
RSS is like subscribing to a printed magazine. But instead of delivering the
it to your U.S. Post Office box, it is electronically delivered to your RSS
reader on your desktop, cell phone or BlackBerry. What if you could direct a
website or news source to let you know every time it was updated? In one
way, that is what RSS does for you.
RSS
technology provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date
information sent to you for you to read whenever you wish. It saves you time
and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it is posted on
a website.
Desktop News Readers - Widgets & Gadgets - Web-Based News Reader
There are several ways to obtain RSS feeds. If you are using the most recent
versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, for instance, the software will
ask you if you want to subscribe to the feed on the page you have visited.
Just follow the steps as they appear.
There are several
desktop software applications known as news readers or aggregators that will
collect,
update and display RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources. They ae available for you to download, at no cost, from
Yahoo Widgets
and
Google Desktop Gadgets websites, along with a great many widgets and
gadgets which were created for a mind-boggling array of applications other
than newsgathering, such as games and calendars. News readers vary in how
they look and act. As a result, you may want to try out a few before
choosing one.
Other newsreader versions are web and browser-based. Google and Yahoo, among
others, offer web-based news aggregators that you add to your Google, Yahoo,
Flikr, Facebook, etc. personal page, if you've created one.
After installing the news reader, you
can manually add each news feed from a website by clicking on the "RSS,"
"Subscribe" or the "XML" orange button next to the feed,
such as the City of Farmington's below.
Finally, you can go to the
Yahoo Widget site and download the
NewsStand widget, then
load the City of Farmington's RSS feed URL into it, following the steps below.
Step One - Download a RSS Reader
